Richard Douglas "Doug" Hogan, age 63, passed away at home on May 2, 2026, with his family at his side. A beacon of stability and gentle strength, he left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. He was an adored husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, and friend.
Doug's life was one of service, dedication, and passion. He grew up in his beloved Thomaston, Georgia and was a graduate of R.E. Lee High School. He pursued further education at Gordon College and Georgia State University, becoming a licensed paramedic. For nearly 40 years, Doug devoted his career to serving central Georgia communities, ultimately retiring as an EMS Battalion Chief in Butts County. His commitment to his work was matched by his steady loyalty to family and friends.
Doug was a man of numerous talents and interests. He loved music and taught himself to play guitar, holding an intense admiration for guitarists across all genres. He also had an insatiable appetite for knowledge. An avid lifelong reader, Doug was able to draw on a wealth of information, especially when it came to history. His family fondly recalls the formidable challenge of facing him in trivia games, where his vast store of knowledge made everyone want him on their team.
He was also a skilled craftsman who built numerous projects over the years. His greatest achievement was designing and building his family home. He would later build two more houses for family on the same property, affectionately deeming this creation “the Compound.”
Known for his sarcastic humor and resonant laughter, Doug approached life's challenges with wit as well as determination. After retiring in 2020, he embraced this stage with gusto by letting his hair and beard grow as long as he pleased. He felt that his appearance at last mirrored his true self. He embraced life fully and was always up for a new adventure.
Doug was the eldest child of Bobby Joe Hogan and Rachael Massey Hogan, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Jennifer Hogan; daughter Sarah Johnson and husband Eric Johnson; son Caleb Thomason and wife Madison Cawthon Thomason; and son Gabriel Hogan and partner Ana Mason. His legacy continues through them, and his grandchildren: Charlotte, Raegan, Penelope, and Milo. He is additionally survived by his "little brother" Jimmy (Ellen) and "baby sister" Carolyn (Hillary). He never stopped referring to his siblings in this way.
A service to celebrate Doug's life will be held at the Monroe County Memorial Chapel, located at 86 W. Main Street, Forsyth, GA on May 16, 2026. The family will welcome visitors from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with a brief service to follow.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Doug's honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The family asks that guests wear any color of their choice to honor Doug's vibrant and rich existence.
The Hogan family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Central Georgia Cancer Care as well as Heartland Hospice for their compassionate treatment and care during Doug's final journey.
