Mary Butler

March 28, 1940 — November 21, 2023

Snellville, Georgia

Mary Emily Doster Butler of Snellville, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, November 21, 2023. She was born to Clarence Franklin Doster and Rosa Mae Smith Doster on March 28, 1940, the fourth of eight children. A native of Forsyth, Georgia, she was a 1959 graduate of Mary Pearsons High School, where she was a fierce basketball player.

Mimi is preceded in death by her parents; brother Glynn F. Doster and sister Rose Alice Fite. Mimi is survived by five siblings: John Robert Doster (Agnes), Judy Ogletree (Tommy), Thelma Sheffield, Martha Doster (Ray Moomey), and George Doster (Flo Camp); plus multiple nieces and nephews.

Mimi, as she was affectionately known to family and friends, was married to Lee Otis Butler of Barnesville, Georgia; although the marriage ended, she remained a lifelong friend of the family.

A special coworker, Barbara Clark and her husband became her second family. This friendship made it possible for Mimi to enjoy life with them and love Carol Clark and Susan Clark Quinley as her own. Daughter, Susan Clark Quinley was a frequent visitor until her last days.

After an impressive 31-year career with the State of Georgia, she retired in 1992 as a Branch Manager with the Sales and Use Tax Department.

Mimi enjoyed gardening, baking the famous pound cake, traveling, photography, and an occasional trip to the casino. Her travels and cruises took her to a number of foreign countries, including the Holy Land. Most memorable were her extensive trips with George. A favorite accomplishment was hiking the Grand Canyon rim to rim, a total of 23 miles.

Mimi was an active member of Mountain Park Baptist Church. She enjoyed her bible study class where she served many positions, sending cards to those facing illness or other needs. As a member of UDC Chapter in Forsyth, she was recognized as a 25 year member in 2018. Mimi will be remembered as an independent woman who cared about making sure her loved ones were well and supported, and frequently opened her home to those who needed a temporary place to live. Mimi was never boastful and lived a modest life, putting others first.
