Janne Butler Bazemore

September 4, 1940 — April 29, 2026

Forsyth

Dr. Janne Butler Bazemore, 85, passed away on April 29, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by curiosity, dedication, and a deep compassion for others.

An only child, she was cherished and adored by her parents, a foundation that shaped her confidence and sense of purpose. From an early age, she displayed a love of learning and a drive for excellence. A true perfectionist, she completed her college education at the University of Georgia, earning her bachelor’s degree in just three years, reflecting both her intellect and determination. Later, she completed three postgraduate degrees, two master’s degrees and one doctorate degree.

Dr. Bazemore’s passion for knowledge led to a lifelong career in education that she embraced as her calling. She began teaching in Lamar County at Milner High School and later joined Barnesville Academy, where she taught English and Latin for many years. She went on to serve as Head of School at both Barnesville Academy and Flint River Academy, and later as a counselor in the Crawford County and Monroe County school systems. Throughout her career, she was respected for her professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to her students.

Dr. Bazemore created a classroom where students felt supported, inspired, and truly seen, balancing high expectations with warmth and humor. She invested deeply in her students’ lives by teaching piano lessons, chaperoning school trips, offering guidance, and remaining a trusted mentor long after graduation.

Above all, her greatest joy was her family. Janne treasured time together, especially the laughter of her children and grandchildren at family gatherings, moments that meant the world to her.

Janne was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Lee Bazemore; her grandson, Adam Rigg; and her parents, James Washington Butler and Grace Ellis Butler. Survivors include her daughters: Bonnie Claytor (Jim) of Columbia, South Carolina, Beverly McEwen (Scott) of Winter Springs, Florida, and Jannellen Rigg (Kevin) of Forsyth, Georgia; grandchildren: Stacy Claytor, Kelly Claytor, Brian Claytor (Catherine), Brandon McEwen, Brooke McEwen, Gracie Kate Craig (Nicholas), and Peter Rigg; mother-in-law, Dot Bazemore of Forsyth; brother-in-law, Bill Bazemore (Julie) of Forsyth; nephew, Will Bazemore (Mary Glynn) of Marietta, Georgia; nieces, Katherine Gaskins (Mike) and Margaret Lewis (Chris); and numerous other great nieces and nephews.

She will be remembered not only for her accomplishments, but for the countless lives she touched and the genuine care she gave so freely.
