James William Stephens

James “Jimmy” William Stephens passed away Thursday, November 24, 2022. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at Monroe County Memorial Chapel with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Monroe Hills Memorial Gardens. Rev. Ricky Niblett will officiate. Mr. Stephens was born February 25, 1944 in Portsmouth, Virginia to the late Jefferson Z. Stephens and Thelma Ramsey. He was a retired insulator, a veteran of the United States Army and a member of Strict Observance Lodge 18. He loved planting a garden, tinkering with his tractors, enjoyed watching Mary Persons Bulldogs and GA Bulldogs, family gatherings and eating at the Waffle House. Everybody that new him loved him and he loved his hometown. Mr. Stephens is predeceased by the love of his life, Ann Childre and sister, Renee Caswell. Survivors include his children, Darren and RoseMary Stephens of Augusta and Sherry and Troy Tanner of Byron; sisters, Kathi and Charlie Hodges of Madison, MS and Carol Stephens of Lizella; grandchildren, Tyler and Whitney Tanner, Ainsley Stephens, Conner Stephens; great grandchildren, Hadleigh Grace Tanner and Sadie Leigh Tanner; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Monroe County Memorial Chapel has charge of arrangements.
