James Smith, 83, of Monroe County Georgia, passed away Saturday, December 2, 2023. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm, Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at Liberty Baptist Church with Pastor Lamar Cole officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery, 3043 High Falls Road, Jackson GA 30233.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary L. Smith of Monroe County; 5 children, Mitchell Smith, Barbara Stanley, Frankie Smith, Tammy Castleberry (Eric), And John Quincy Smith (Rhonda) all of Monroe County; fourteen grandchildren, thirty three great grandchildren and eleven great great grandchildren; his brother, Emmett Smith of Forsyth; two sisters, Margie Smith of Griffin and Florine Taylor of Thomaston.
Mr. Smith was a faithful member of Liberty Baptist Church, he loved to hunt, fish and spending time at the beach especially Pensacola Beach. Mr. Smith loved his family and was loved by children everywhere. One of his many passions was cooking with fresh vegetables he grew in his garden; he grew many varieties of peppers which he used to make hot sauce and chow chow. His famous sloppy joe's, butter beans and delicious corn bread will be remembered by many. He worked for seventeen years as a supervisor for Bibb Mills and seven years for Smead Manufacturing.
