James Eliopolo Patrick

Jun 18, 1944 — Oct 6, 2026

Monroe County, GA

James Eliopolo Patrick, a U.S. Army veteran, talented space planner and designer, writer, and uniquely memorable individual, passed away on October 6, 2026. Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, on June 18, 1944, he grew up in Savannah, Georgia, built his professional career in Atlanta, and eventually retired to Monroe County, Georgia.

James attended Georgia State University and went on to establish a career in space planning and design, where his creativity, vision, and attention to detail left their mark. Throughout his professional life, he worked with Testa Miller & Associates, Rich’s Department Stores, the Space Management Division of the State of Georgia, Carson Guest, and Dean Designs.

Among his favorite projects were the interior design and construction of the vestibule connecting the MARTA station to the adjoining fast-food eatery at Rich’s downtown Atlanta store, as well as developing the interior retail design and construction package that became the prototype for Depot, Inc., a chain of specialty clothing stores. These projects reflected his ability to combine creative thinking with practical design.

Before his professional career, James honorably served his country in the United States Army from January 1967 to January 1969. He held the rank of Private First Class (PFC, E-3) and was a Vietnam veteran who served with Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile), as an 11 Bravo 10 infantryman. His honorable discharge marked the completion of his service to his country.

James was a complex, interesting, and truly unique individual. He had a gift for making people laugh and a generous, kindhearted nature that made him memorable to those who knew him. He loved music, especially classical, and found great pleasure in reading. He was also a writer with a distinctive voice, composing clever quips, memoirs of his experiences in Vietnam, and two children's books that, despite his efforts, were never published. His words and stories reflected his wit, imagination, and individual perspective on life. James was never easily defined, and that was part of what made him special.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Ella Duncan and Nick John Eliopolo, and by his faithful companions, Gate’ and Princess Onepawgone, who held a special place in his life.

A service honoring James's life and military service will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2617 Vinson Highway, Milledgeville, Georgia 31061. Will Johnson will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Christian Church or to a charity of your choice.

A special word of gratitude is extended to the staff at Arlington Senior Living for the exceptional care and compassion they showed James. Their efforts went above and beyond and will always be remembered with deep appreciation.
