Eugene F. Monroe, aged 83, died on December 7, 2025, in Bradenton, Florida after a long bout with lung cancer. A memorial service will be held 10:30 AM, Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Forsyth Presbyterian Church. 63 North Jackson Street, Forsyth, Georgia, 31029.
He graduated from Alma High School in Alma, Michigan in 1960 and from Central Michigan University in 1965.
Gene was an Army veteran who was a part of the 101st Airborne, serving two tours in Vietnam. He was also a basic training commander during the Vietnam War era. He was a proud veteran.
Mr. Rogers most famously said, ”Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” Gene was the embodiment of that sentiment. He was a tireless volunteer for Habitat for Humanity in both Georgia and Florida, the Red Cross, as well as Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. He spent weeks cleaning up after Hurricane Katrina. He gave blood to the American Red Cross regularly as long as he was able, gallon after gallon over the years.
Gene was a renaissance man, with talents both musical and mechanical. He sang in the Macon Civic Chorale for many years, with Handel’s Messiah being one of his favorite works to perform. He could fix almost anything including plumbing, electrical, and he did so for the United States Postal Service for 16 years. He loved to call himself a safecracker, and he was one of the very few who was trained for such duty.
He was survived by his wife of 63 years, Sandy, as well as two children, Lisa (Scott) Hamilton and Dawn Walters, two grandchildren, Christopher Walters, and Paige Zoe Hamilton. He is also survived by his sister Carolyn (Mike) Lehigh, a sister in law, Judy Monroe, and a brother in law Gene Husted.
He was proceeded in death by his parents Catherine and John as well as four siblings: James, Betty, Susan, and Elaine.
